Vocabulary Notes for the Unit 11 Reading

Use a dictionary to look up unfamiliar words in this conversation.

Here are some expressions that might not be in your dictionary:

let’s roll (idiom) = let’s go ahead and do it

the key thing = the most important thing

short-handed = not enough people working

school board = the governing body for a school. In the U.S., the public schools are under the control of the local community. In most places, the school board is a group of people who are elected to the job. (Meet the board of the Peralta Community College District.)

the chair = the person leading the meeting

the bottom line = the main idea

sugar-coat = make something seem sweet and nice when it really is not

put a positive spin on things = put things in a positive way, make things sound positive.
